NHTSA Complaint about AIR BAGS:ON-OFF SWITCH ASSEMBLY filed November 22, 2007

NHTSA complaint #647089 (ODI reference 10209690) concerns a 2007 KIA OPTIMA and was filed on November 22, 2007. The owner reports the failure occurred on April 30, 2007. The report was geocoded to Florida based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as air bags:on-off switch assembly, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. No VIN was supplied by the filer, so this complaint contributes to model-year trend data but cannot be tied to a specific vehicle.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same KIA OPTIMA cohort independently describe similar air bags:on-off switch assembly failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

WE PURCHASED OUR 2007 KIA OPTIMA THIS YEAR IN APRIL AND EVER SINCE WE'VE HAD THE CAR WE'VE HAD ISSUES WITH AIR BAG SENSOR ON THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT SEAT. I RIDE IN THE PASSENGER SEAT AND ABOUT 30% OF THE TIME THE AIR BAG IS OFF LIGHT DOESN'T TURN OFF WHEN I'M SITTING IN THE SEAT, ONCE I LIFT MY REAR END OFF THE SEAT AND PUT IT BACK DOWN THEN THAT LIGHT GOES OFF. I'VE TAKEN THIS IN TO THE DEALER ONCE ALREADY AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING APPARENTLY WRONG, WE BROUGHT THE CAR HOME AND WITHIN 2 DAYS THE PROBLEM WAS RECURRING. THE CAR WILL BE RETURNED TO THE DEALER FOR A SECOND TIME WITH THIS ISSUE, I JUST WANT MY AIR BAG TO GO OFF IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT, I BELIEVE THAT'S FAIR. THE LAST TIME WE TOOK IT IN THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH SENSOR ACCORDING THE COMPUTER, THEY RESET THE COMPUTER AND SENT US ON OUR WAY. HOPEFULLY THIS TIME WE'LL BE MORE SATISFIED WITH THE CONCLUSION OF THIS SERIOUS PROBLEM. *TR
