2005 JEEP LIBERTY — Complaint #629669

Open-data reference.

NHTSA Complaint about FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER:DELIVERY filed July 8, 2007

NHTSA complaint #629669 (ODI reference 10195559) concerns a 2005 JEEP LIBERTY and was filed on July 8, 2007. The owner reports the failure occurred on July 7, 2007. The vehicle had 61,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Texas based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as fuel system, other:delivery, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: yes, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. A complaint that flags a crash, fire, or fatality is escalated on NHTSA's internal review queue and factors more heavily into any Preliminary Evaluation decision on this make and model. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same JEEP LIBERTY cohort independently describe similar fuel system, other:delivery failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

THE REASON I'M WRITING IS BECAUSE I READ IN A JEEP LIBERTY DIESEL 2005/2006 FORUM THAT FUEL LEAKS HAVE BEEN COMMON. ON JULY 07, 07, I PARKED THE JEEP, SHUT OFF ENGINE, AND WALKED INSIDE MY HOUSE. AFTER 10 MINUTESS, I SAW SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER HOOD AND DROPS OF FLAMES COMING FROM UNDER THE JEEP. THE FIRE DEPT. WAS CALLED TO PUT OUT THE FIRE, WHICH BURNED THE ENTIRE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE.*AK
