NHTSA Complaint about VISIBILITY:REAR WINDOW WIPER/WASHER:LINKAGES filed April 19, 2007
NHTSA complaint #621063 (ODI reference 10188360) concerns a 2007 JEEP WRANGLER 4-DR 4X4 and was filed on April 19, 2007. The owner reports the failure occurred on February 3, 2007. The vehicle had 30 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to New Jersey based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as visibility:rear window wiper/washer:linkages, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same JEEP WRANGLER 4-DR 4X4 cohort independently describe similar visibility:rear window wiper/washer:linkages failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 JEEP WRANGLER 4X4. ON THREE OCCASIONS WHILE DRIVING 25MPH, THE SNOW FROZE THE LINKAGE ON THE VEHICLE AND THE WIPERS DIDN'T OPERATE NORMALLY. SNOW ALSO ENTERS THE HEATER VENTILATION SCREEN AT THE BASE OF THE WINDSHIELD, WHICH IS A CLOSED CHAMBER WHERE THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR AND THE LINKAGE IS CONTAINED. THE SNOW FREEZES INTO A SOLID MASS WHERE THE LINKAGE/ WIPERS WILL NOT WORK UNTIL YOU PUT SOME FORM OF HEAT INTO THE CHAMBER TO MELT THE ICE. THE RAIN ALSO MAKES CONTACT WITH THE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS ATTACHED. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE ALTHOUGH THEY STATED THIS FAILURE HAS OCCURRED IN OTHER VEHICLES. THE MANUFACTURER INFORMED HIM TO CONTACT NHTSA. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 2,100.
