Open-data reference.

NHTSA Complaint about SERVICE BRAKES, AIR:DISC filed December 29, 2006

NHTSA complaint #607984 (ODI reference 10177341) concerns a 2005 DODGE NEON and was filed on December 29, 2006. The owner reports the failure occurred on December 13, 2006. The vehicle had 29,900 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to New Mexico based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as service brakes, air:disc, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same DODGE NEON cohort independently describe similar service brakes, air:disc failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

FOR 3 TO 4 WEEKS, INTERMITTENT BRAKING PROBLEMS WITH CAR. AFTER DRIVING ABOUT 3 MILES FROM START, STOPPING AT 4 STOP SIGNS, PASSING THROUGH 3 TRAFFIC LIGHTS NO PROBLEMS - DRIVING USING CRUISE CONTROL SET AT 55-65MPH, DRIVING UP HILL, OFTEN THE ENGINE IS ACCELERATING , WHEN I PUT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE BECAUSE I WANT TO SLOW DOWN - THE BRAKE PEDAL DOES NOT MOVE - I CAN'T PUSH IT DOWN ON THE FIRST TRY. UNTIL YESTERDAY, THE SECOND ATTEMPT AT BRAKING WORKED NORMALLY 100% OF THE TIME. THE CRUISE CONTROL DOES NOT DISENGAGE UNTIL THE BRAKES CAN BE ENGAGED. YESTERDAY I HAD TO TRY THE BRAKE PEDAL THREE TIMES BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO PUSH THE BRAKE PEDAL DOWN AND ENGAGE BRAKES. HAVE BEEN ABLE TO RECREATE PROBLEM SEVERAL TIMES, THE INCIDENT YESTERDAY OCCURED WHEN I WAS TRYING TO RECREATE. PROBLEM HAS OCCURED AT LEAST 20 TIMES IN PAST WEEKS. IN 2 INCIDENTS THE PEDAL INITIALLY RESISTED BUT I WAS ABLE TO PUSH IT DOWN WITHOUT MAKING A SECOND ATTEMPT - DRIVING ON A SORT OF LEVEL AREA. ALWAYS HAPPENS
