Open-data reference.

NHTSA Complaint about WHEELS:HUB filed November 18, 2006

NHTSA complaint #603462 (ODI reference 10173796) concerns a 2000 FORD FOCUS and was filed on November 18, 2006. The owner reports the failure occurred on November 17, 2006. The vehicle had 90,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Colorado based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as wheels:hub, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same FORD FOCUS cohort independently describe similar wheels:hub failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

A "GRINDING" NOISE WAS HEARD WHEN BRAKES WERE APPLIED. INSPECTED BRAKES - FOUND NO PROBLEM. WITHIN A FEW DAYS THE GRINDING NOISE TURNED INTO A CONSTANT "GROWLING"/ "RUMBLING" NOISE. RE-INSPECTED WHEELS/ BRAKES AND FOUND DRIVERS SIDE REAR WHEEL TO BE LOOSE / WOBBLE (LUG NUTS WERE PROPERLY TORQUED). CLOSER INSPECTION REVEALED THAT THE HUB/ WHEEL BEARING ASSEMBLY HAD "SIGNIFICANT PLAY". WHILE THE CAR WAS JACKED UP THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR WHEEL WOULD GO FROM "EASILY SPUN TO NEARLY LOCKED UP". THE "REAR BEARING RETAINING CAP RECALL" WAS PERFORMED ON THIS CAR YEARS AGO - WE ARE THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS CAR.*JB
