NHTSA Complaint about EXTERIOR LIGHTING:TAIL LIGHTS:SWITCH filed September 11, 2006

NHTSA complaint #595716 (ODI reference 10167874) concerns a 1992 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS and was filed on September 11, 2006. The owner reports the failure occurred on August 22, 2006. The vehicle had 129,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Virginia based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as exterior lighting:tail lights:switch, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS cohort independently describe similar exterior lighting:tail lights:switch failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT, IT WAS NOTICED THAT THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS, TAIL LIGHTS, AND PARKING LIGHTS WERE NOT LIT EVEN THOUGH THE HEADLIGHTS BRAKE LIGHTS AND TURN SIGNALS WERE WORKING PROPERLY. THE FUSE FOR THAT CIRCUIT WAS CHECKED AND IT WAS NOT BLOWN. THE DASHBOARD WAS DISASSEMBLED FOR REMOVAL OF THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH AND IT WAS REVEALED THAT THE WIRE TO THE TAIL LAMP/PARKING LAMP/INSTRUMENT PANEL HAD BECOME HOT ENOUGH TO MELT THE WIRE ITSELF. THE CONNECTORS FOR THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH ARE EN-BLOCK AND CONSIST OF 7 CONNECTORS IN ONE BLOCK AND 3 CONNECTORS IN A SEPARATE BLOCK. THE 7 CONNECTOR BLOCK HAD BURNT PLASTIC IN THE AREA OF THE TAIL LIGHT WIRE, AND THE 3 CONNECTOR BLOCK WAS WARPED FROM THE HEAT. THIS IS A 1992 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS THAT WAS BUILT IN MAY OF 1991. REPAIRS ARE AWAITING SUITABLE REPLACEMENT PARTS. *NM
