2006 TOYOTA MATRIX — Complaint #584637
Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE:GASOLINE filed June 10, 2006
NHTSA complaint #584637 (ODI reference 10159506) concerns a 2006 TOYOTA MATRIX and was filed on June 10, 2006. The owner reports the failure occurred on June 9, 2006. The vehicle had 11,800 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Maryland based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as engine and engine cooling:engine:gasoline, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same TOYOTA MATRIX cohort independently describe similar engine and engine cooling:engine:gasoline failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2006 TOYOTA MATRIX shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.
Complaint Description
TWICE WHILE DRIVING AT 60 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY (IN TRAFFIC BUT NOT BUMPER TO BUMPER), MY TOYOTA MATRIX ENGINE TURNED OFF. I WAS ON THE RIGHT AND ABLE TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE AND RESTART THE ENGINE, HOWEVER HAD I BEEN IN THE LEFT LANE THIS WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE AND A SERIOUS ACCIDENT COULD HAVE HAPPENED. THE VEHICLE SUBSEQUENTLY WAS INSPECTED BY THE DEALERS' SERVICE DEPARTMENT (RUSSELL TOYOTA IN CATONSVILLE, MARYLAND). THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE AND FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. THE CAR IS ONLY A FEW MONTHS OLD AND HAS 11,800 MILES ON IT, AND HAS RECEIVED ALL PROPER SERVICE CHECKS, OIL CHANGES, ETC. *JB
