NHTSA Complaint about STEERING:LINKAGES:DRAG:POWER ASSIST SYSTEM filed February 20, 2006
NHTSA complaint #573228 (ODI reference 10150683) concerns a 1999 CADILLAC DEVILLE and was filed on February 20, 2006. The owner reports the failure occurred on September 14, 2000. The vehicle had 13,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Florida based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as steering:linkages:drag:power assist system, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same CADILLAC DEVILLE cohort independently describe similar steering:linkages:drag:power assist system failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 1999 CADILLAC DEVILLE shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.
Complaint Description
MY 1999 CADILLAC DEVILLE HAS HAD TWO ONGOING DEFECTS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN FIXED. THE PROBLEMS BEGAN DURING THE FIRST YEAR WHEN THE CAR WAS UNDER WARRANTY AND AFTER MANY SERVICE VISITS FOR REPAIR HAS NOT BEEN FIXED. TWO WARNING INDICATOR LIGHTS APPEAR, 1.TRACTION ENGAGING LIGHT AND 2.ANTI-LOCK BRAKE LIGHT CONTINUE TO ILLUMINATE. AT THE SAME TIME THERE IS AN INTERMITTENT GROWLING NOISE AND THE BRAKES GRAB AND MAKE THE STEERING DIFFICULT. CADILLAC IS AWARE OF THE DEFECTS AND THE CAR HAS BEEN AT THE CADILLAC DEALER NUMEROUS TIMES TO CORRECT THESE TWO DEFECTS BUT THE PROBLEMS PERSIST. CADILLAC STATE THAT THE CAR DOES NOT MEET THE CRITERIA FOR BUY BACK AND THEREFORE I AM IN POSSESSION OF A CAR THAT POSES TWO SAFETY HAZARDS AND I AM FEARFUL TO DRIVE THE CAR AND IT WOULD BE UNETHICAL TO SELL AN UNSAFE CAR. *JB
