NHTSA Complaint about SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:DIFFERENTIAL PROPORTIONAL VALVE filed January 10, 2006

NHTSA complaint #568709 (ODI reference 10147349) concerns a 2003 KIA SPECTRA and was filed on January 10, 2006. The owner reports the failure occurred on January 9, 2006. The vehicle had 52,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Illinois based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as service brakes, hydraulic:foundation components:differential proportional valve, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. No VIN was supplied by the filer, so this complaint contributes to model-year trend data but cannot be tied to a specific vehicle.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same KIA SPECTRA cohort independently describe similar service brakes, hydraulic:foundation components:differential proportional valve failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2003 KIA SPECTRA shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.

Complaint Description

THE BRAKE PROPORTIONING VALVE IS LEAKING AND THE CAR IS CURRENTLY IN THE SHOP HAVING THIS REPLACED. THIS IS A 2003 KIA SPECTRA. THIS PART APPEARS TO BE A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT AS THERE ARE OTHER COMPLAINTS LISTED HERE AND ELSEWHERE. HAS THERE BEEN A RECALL AS THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT I CANNOT BELIEVE IS LIMITED TO MY VEHICLE. ALSO, THE INTERIOR COMPONENTS STARTED FALLING OFF WITHIN 6 WEEKS OF OWNERSHIP. THE CONSOLE LID BROKE, THE CAPS FOR THE GAS RELEASE LEVER AND THE TRUNK LEVER HAVE ALL COME OFF NUMEROUS TIME. THE CAR JACK SNAPPED THE FIRST AND ONLY TIME IT WAS USED TO CHANGE A FLAT TIRE. *JB
