Open-data reference.

NHTSA Complaint about SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:DRUM:DRUM filed September 23, 2005

NHTSA complaint #555690 (ODI reference 10137447) concerns a 2005 DODGE DAKOTA and was filed on September 23, 2005. The owner reports the failure occurred on June 7, 2005. The vehicle had 470 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Alabama based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as service brakes, hydraulic:foundation components:drum:drum, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same DODGE DAKOTA cohort independently describe similar service brakes, hydraulic:foundation components:drum:drum failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2005 DODGE DAKOTA shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.

Complaint Description

AT 470 MILES, MY 2005 DODGE DAKOTA CLUB CAB DEVELOPED A BAD SHIMMY/VIBRATION WHENEVER THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. THE DEALERS SERVICE DEPARTMENT DETERMINED THAT THE REAR BRAKE DRUMS WERE DEFECTIVE. THEY REPLACED THEM UNDER WARRANTY AND SEVERAL DAYS LATER THE PROBLEM RETURNED. THEY MACHINED THE REAR DRUMS AND PUT THEM BACK ON THE VEHICLE. AT 1472 MILES I HAD TO RETURN TO THE DEALER AGAIN. THE SAME VIBRATION UPON APPLICATION OF THE BRAKES HAD RETURNED, ONLY WORSE. THEY CONFIRMED THE PROBLEM AND MACHINED THE DRUMS ONE LAST TIME. THIS FIX ONLY WORKED FOR A FEW MORE DAYS. THE SHIMMY/VIBRATION WAS GONE, ONLY TO BE REPLACED BY A LOUD THUMPING NOISE FROM THE REAR END WHENEVER BRAKES WERE APPLIED. AT THIS TIME, THE VEHICLE HAD JUST OVER 1700 MILES ON IT. I RETURNED TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT ON 13 SEPTEMBER 2005 AND THE SERVICE TEAM MADE 6 MORE ATTEMPTS TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM, INCLUDING BRAND NEW DRUMS, MACHINING OF SAME AND TRYING DRUMS FROM ANOTHER 2005 DAKOTA IN THEIR INVENTORY. NOTHING
