Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about SEAT BELTS:INTEGRATED CHILD SEAT filed September 23, 2005
NHTSA complaint #555665 (ODI reference 10137425) concerns a 2005 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN and was filed on September 23, 2005. The owner reports the failure occurred on September 22, 2005. The vehicle had 19,301 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Michigan based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as seat belts:integrated child seat, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 1, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same DODGE GRAND CARAVAN cohort independently describe similar seat belts:integrated child seat failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2005 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.
Complaint Description
WE OWN A STOW AND GO GRAND CARAVAN, WHILE STOPPING SUDDENLY MY TWO YEAR OLD WENT FLYING FORWARD STILL STRAPPED IN HIS 5 POINT CAR SEAT AND STILL STRAPPED TO THE VEHICLE SEAT USING THE LATCH SYSTEM. HE HIT THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT WHERE HE REST SCREAMING TILL I COULD PUSH THE SEAT BACK IN PLACE. HE HURT HIS CHEEK AND NOSE! I FEEL THERE SHOULD BE SOME KIND OF WARNING THAT THE SEAT WAS NOT ENGAGED, SEEINGS I NEVER USE THIS SEAT TO ENTER THE BACK SEAT I'VE NEVER THOUGHT TO CHECK THE STATUS OF THE CHAIR! NOW HE IS AFRAID TO GET INTO HIS CAR SEAT AND I'M AFRAID THAT IT COULD HAPPEN AGAIN AS WELL. I'M SO GLAD IT WASN'T AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE I'M AFRAID HE WOULDN'T BE WITH US TODAY. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT I CAN DO TO HELP THIS TO NEVER HAPPEN TO US OR ANYBODY ELSE. *NM
