1999 FORD EXPEDITION — Complaint #553827

Open-data reference.

NHTSA Complaint about SUSPENSION:REAR:SPRINGS:AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM filed September 10, 2005

NHTSA complaint #553827 (ODI reference 10136109) concerns a 1999 FORD EXPEDITION and was filed on September 10, 2005. The owner reports the failure occurred on August 1, 2005. The vehicle had 97,100 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Texas based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as suspension:rear:springs:air suspension system, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same FORD EXPEDITION cohort independently describe similar suspension:rear:springs:air suspension system failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 1999 FORD EXPEDITION shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.

Complaint Description

THE AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM. THIS IS THE SECOND 1999 EXPEDITION THAT I HAVE OWNED AND THE SAME THING HAS HAPPENED TO BOTH AND I AM UNABLE TO GET ANY HELP FROM ANYBODY AS TO WHY THIS HAS HAPPENED AGAIN. ON BOTH VEHICLES THE AIR SUSPENSION STOPPED WORKING IN THE REAR SECTION CAUSING THE VEHICLE NOT TO LIFT UP AND MAKING THE VEHICLE BOUNCE ALL ACROSS THE ROAD IF YOU TRY TO DRIVE IT. IT DOES NOT RAISE BACK UP AT ALL AND THUS MAKING THE VEHICLE NOT ABLE TO BE DRIVEN. I WANT TO KNOW AM I THE ONLY ONE THAT IS HAVING THIS ISSUE AND ALSO WHY WITH TWO OF THE SAME MODEL VEHICLES THAT I HAVE OWNED? IS THIS A DEFECT? EVERYONE THAT I HAVE TALKED TO SAYS THAT THIS IS A VERY COSTLY FIX, MAYBE RANGING FROM $600 PLUS. AND I ALMOST FEEL AS THOUGH I AM BEING ROBBED BY HAVING TO FIX THE SAME PROBLEM THAT I HAD WITH THE FIRST 1999 EXPEDITION THAT I OWNED.... PLEASE HELP. *JB
