2000 FORD FOCUS — Complaint #544862
Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER:DELIVERY filed July 19, 2005
NHTSA complaint #544862 (ODI reference 10129323) concerns a 2000 FORD FOCUS and was filed on July 19, 2005. The owner reports the failure occurred on January 4, 2005. The vehicle had 107,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to New York based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as fuel system, other:delivery, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: yes, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. A complaint that flags a crash, fire, or fatality is escalated on NHTSA's internal review queue and factors more heavily into any Preliminary Evaluation decision on this make and model. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same FORD FOCUS cohort independently describe similar fuel system, other:delivery failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2000 FORD FOCUS shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.
Complaint Description
CAR WAS BEING DRIVEN TO WORK WHEN ENGINE BEGAN TO HESITATE AND EVENTUALLY STALLED. DUE TO LOSS OF POWER STEERING, DRIVER LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR AND COLLIDED WITH CONCRETE MEDIAN BARRIER. ACCIDENT CAUSED AESTHETIC DAMAGE TO FRONT AND REAR BUMPERS. THE CAR WAS RARELY DRIVEN AFTER THE ACCIDENT SINCE IT WOULD ONLY DRIVE FOR A FEW MILES BEFORE STALLING AND I DIDN'T WANT IT TO CAUSE ANOTHER ACCIDENT. I COULDN'T AFFORD TO HAVE THE CAR FIXED. I HAVE RECENTLY DISCOVERED FORD'S RECALL #03N01 - FUEL DELIVERY MODULE ON THE VEHICLE [XXX] WHEN DOING RESEARCH ABOUT HOW TO FIX THE PROBLEM WITH THE CAR STALLING. THIS WAS FOUND ON THE FOLLOWING WEBSITE: HTTP://WWW.ESCORTFOCUS.COM/HTML/FOCUS_111903.HTML . THE RECALL WAS ISSUED IN NOV. 2003 BUT I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED. I HAVE A SCREEN CAPTURE OF THE MY FORD VEHICLE HOME WEBSITE WHERE IT LISTS RECALLS FOR MY VEHICLE. I USE THIS AS MY PRIMARY SOURCE FOR VEHICLE RECALLS AND IT DOES NOT AND HAS NEVER LISTED THIS RECALL. BY THEIR OWN ADMISSION, FORD HAS INSTRUCT
