2003 DODGE RAM 1500 — Complaint #504952
Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about SEATS:MID/REAR ASSEMBLY filed November 3, 2004
NHTSA complaint #504952 (ODI reference 10098234) concerns a 2003 DODGE RAM 1500 and was filed on November 3, 2004. The owner reports the failure occurred on September 19, 2004. The report was geocoded to North Carolina based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as seats:mid/rear assembly, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same DODGE RAM 1500 cohort independently describe similar seats:mid/rear assembly failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2003 DODGE RAM 1500 shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.
Complaint Description
I OWN A 2003 DODGE RAM 4X2 QUAD CAB. I HAVE NOTICED THE 2004 MODEL DODGE RAM QUAD CABS HAVE BACK SEAT HEAD REST INSTALLED IN THEM. I AM POLICE OFFICER OF MANY YEARS, I AM ASSIGNED TO THE TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT TEAM. I HAVE INVESIGATED LOW SPEED COLLISIONS IN THE SAME MODEL TRUCK AS MINE. IN MOST CASES THE REAR SEAT OCCUPANTS HAVE RECEIVED HEAD AND SPINAL INJURIES DUE TO THERE NOT BEING ANY HEAD REST IN THOSE SEATING POSITIONS. THE IMPACT AREA FOR INJURY WAS NORMALLY THE BACK GLASS. I HAVE A TEN YEAR OLD SON, WHO IS 4 FOOT 11 INCHES TALL, THAT SITS IN THE BACK SEAT WHEN WE TRAVEL. HIS HEAD IS WELL ABOVE THE BACK SEAT. I FEEL DODGE SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE TO HAVE THE REAR HEAD REST INSTALLED IN THE 2000 MODELS TO CURRENT. ANY ASSISTANCE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. *AK
