NHTSA Complaint about VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:SPRINGS filed October 26, 2004

NHTSA complaint #503527 (ODI reference 10096424) concerns a 1999 HONDA CR-V and was filed on October 26, 2004. The owner reports the failure occurred on April 5, 2003. The report was geocoded to Pennsylvania based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as vehicle speed control:springs, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: yes, fire: no, injuries: 2, fatalities: 1. A complaint that flags a crash, fire, or fatality is escalated on NHTSA's internal review queue and factors more heavily into any Preliminary Evaluation decision on this make and model. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same HONDA CR-V cohort independently describe similar vehicle speed control:springs failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. IT TOOK OFF ON ITS OWN SO FAST THAT NOT EVEN THE BRAKES WOULD OR COULD SLOW IT DOWN. I ACTIVELY APPLIED MY BRAKES BUT TO MY HORROR, MY BRAKES WOULD NOT WORK AND COULD NOT SLOW DOWN THE CAR. THE CAR KEPT ACCELERATING UNCONTROLLABLY. I EVEN PULLED UP ON MY EMERGENCY BRAKE AND TRIED TO MANEUVER MY CAR AS I WAS TRAVELING AT A RAPID PACE THROUGH THE TRAFFIC AND COULD NOT STOP MY CAR UNTIL IT CRASHED INTO ANOTHER. THIS HORRIFIC ACCIDENT TOTALED MY C
