2003 KIA SEDONA — Complaint #496968
Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about SERVICE BRAKES, AIR:DRUM:SHOES/LININGS filed September 18, 2004
NHTSA complaint #496968 (ODI reference 10091216) concerns a 2003 KIA SEDONA and was filed on September 18, 2004. The owner reports the failure occurred on September 16, 2004. The vehicle had 40,295 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Georgia based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as service brakes, air:drum:shoes/linings, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same KIA SEDONA cohort independently describe similar service brakes, air:drum:shoes/linings failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2003 KIA SEDONA shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.
Complaint Description
I'VE HAD MANY PROBLEMS WITH MY 2003 KIA SEDONA. THE EMERGENCY BRAKE HAS NEVER BEEN RIGHT. THE BRAKES WERE REPLACED AT 13K MILES, AGAIN AT 24K MILES (FRONT & BACK) AND I'M SURE THEY NEED TO BE REPLACED AGAIN AT 40K MILES. AT 22K MILES I TOOK THE VAN TO THE SHOP FOR BRAKES ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT BOTH WHEEL BEARINGS, THE LEFT STRUT (THEY REFUSED TO REPLACE BOTH STRUTS SINCE IT WAS WARRANTY BUT IF I WAS PAYING FOR THE REPAIRS THEY WOULD RECOMEND REPLACING IN PAIRS) AND THE POWER STEERING PUMP WAS GOING OUT (WHICH THE MANAGER SAID HE WAS DOING ME A FAVOR BY TELLING ME ABOUT). I HAVE ALSO COMPLAINED OF THE A/C TAKING FOREVER TO COOL DOWN, HAD A SENSOR REPLACED FOR THE GAS TANK AFTER THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND SERVICE TO THE DRIVERS SEATBELT. THEN YESTERDAY DURING A STORM I WENT THROUGH A PUDDLE ABOUT 4 OR 5 INCHES DEEP WHICH SPLASHED WATER ON MY VAN FOR A COUPLE OF SECONDS AND ABOUT 50 FEET DOWN THE ROAD THE VAN DIED AND COULD NOT BE RESTARTED. UPON HAVING IT TOWED TO THE KIA DEALE
