NHTSA Complaint about SERVICE BRAKES, AIR:DRUM:SHOES/LININGS filed May 20, 2004

NHTSA complaint #476227 (ODI reference 10072910) concerns a 2003 HONDA ACCORD and was filed on May 20, 2004. The owner reports the failure occurred on May 18, 2004. The vehicle had 8,035 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to California based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as service brakes, air:drum:shoes/linings, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same HONDA ACCORD cohort independently describe similar service brakes, air:drum:shoes/linings failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

DURING DRIVING IN FREEWAY SPEEDS EXPERIENCE SHAKING STEERING WHEEL AND TOOK IT TO THE DEALER. THEY TOLD ME IT WAS A BALENCE, THAT DID NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM. I CAME BACK THE FOLLOWING WEEK LATER, TOLD THEM TO CHECK MY BRAKES BECAUSE I THOUGHT THAT WAS THE PROBLEM IT TURNS OUT THAT THEY WERE WARPED. THE DEALER REPLACED THE PADS AND TURNED THE ROTORS BUT TOLD THAT IT WAS A ONE TIME ONLY UNDER WARRANTY, AND THAT IT HAPPEND BECAUSE OF MY DRIVING AND MY CONSTANT BRAKING, THAT MADE ME UPSET BECAUSE THEY QUESTIONED HOW I DRIVE. THIS HAS NEVER HAPPEND TO ME UNDER JUST A YEAR OF USE I STRONGLY DISAGREE. *AK
