Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about TIRES:MARKINGS filed April 27, 2004
NHTSA complaint #472890 (ODI reference 10067898) concerns a 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY SOLARA and was filed on April 27, 2004. The owner reports the failure occurred on January 15, 2004. The report was geocoded to New York based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as tires:markings, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. No VIN was supplied by the filer, so this complaint contributes to model-year trend data but cannot be tied to a specific vehicle.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same TOYOTA CAMRY SOLARA cohort independently describe similar tires:markings failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description
BRIDGESTONE POTENZA RE-92 P215-60R16 M&S. THIS TIRE HAS BEEN MISTAKENLY CLASSIFIED AS A MUD & SNOW TIRE. IN MY 35 YEARS OF DRIVING, I HAVE NEVER DRIVEN ON SUCH A DANGEROUS TIRE THAT WAS CLASSIFIED M&S. ANY SNOW WHATSOEVER MAKES THE VEHICLE(2004 TOYOTA SOLARA SE) EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO CONTROL SAFELY. I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THE TIRE BEING USED SOLELY AS A NON-WINTER TIRE, BUT FOR NHTSA TO ALLOW THE M&S DESIGNATION ON THIS TIRE IS TANTAMOUNT TO GROSS NEGLIGENCE. IF YOU THINK THAT I AM ALONE IN MY OBSERVATION ON THIS TIRE, THEN PLEASE SEE WEBSITE 1010TIRES.COM AND READ THE NUMEROUS CUSTOMER REVIEWS ABOUT HOW DANGEROUS THESE TIRES ARE IN SNOW. I RESPECTFULLY ASK YOU TO PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS TIRE CLASSIFICATION.*AK
