Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about SUSPENSION:REAR:SPRINGS:LEAF SPRING ASSEMBLY:LEAF filed March 9, 2003
NHTSA complaint #397076 (ODI reference 10010184) concerns a 2002 NISSAN XTERRA and was filed on March 9, 2003. The owner reports the failure occurred on March 6, 2003. The vehicle had 32,600 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to New York based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as suspension:rear:springs:leaf spring assembly:leaf, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same NISSAN XTERRA cohort independently describe similar suspension:rear:springs:leaf spring assembly:leaf failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description
I OWN A 13 MONTH OLD 2002 NISSAN XTERRA THAT HAS 32,600 MILES ON IT AND HAS NEVER BEEN DRIVEN OFF-ROAD. THE LEAF SPRING ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE BROKE AT THE REAR MOUNTING BOLT. LUCKILY WE CAUGHT IT IMMEDIATELY AND THE DEALER IS REPLACING IT UNDER WARRANTY. HAS THIS BEEN A PROBLEM WITH THE XTERRA AND SHOULD THE OTHER ONE BE REPLACED AT THE SAME TIME? THE DEALER CLAIMS TO HAVE LOOKED AT THE OTHER ONE AND SEES NO PROBLEM AT THIS TIME. I'M CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY BECAUSE I DO A LOT OF HIGH SPEED DRIVING WITH MY DAUGHTER IN THE CAR. *NLM
