Open-data reference.

NHTSA Complaint about WHEELS:MULTI PIECE filed February 17, 2003

NHTSA complaint #394425 (ODI reference 10007648) concerns a 1999 DODGE DURANGO and was filed on February 17, 2003. The owner reports the failure occurred on February 14, 2003. The vehicle had 56,740 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Pennsylvania based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as wheels:multi piece, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same DODGE DURANGO cohort independently describe similar wheels:multi piece failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

THE ENTIRE FRONT WHEEL HUB ON DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDES HAD TO BE REPLACED AT 56,740 MILES, I WOULD LIKE TO ADD THESE WERE EASY HIGHWAY MILES. IT HAPPENED WITHOUT WARNING, I WAS DRIVING WHEN I NOTICED A LOUD RUMBLE AND VIBRATION UNDER MY FEET WHEN TURNING THE WHEEL SLIGHTLY, I IMMEDIATELY WENT TO MY MECHANIC AN WAS SURPRISED WHEN HE PUT IT ON THE RACK AND BOTH WHEELS ROCKED BACK AND FORTH!! THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED A SERIOUS ACCIDENT HAD THEY LET GO WHILE TRAVELING 50MPH. JUST WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM? MY HUSBAND CALLED THE DEALERSHIP WHERE WE LEASED IT TO SEE IF THEY HAD ANY COMPLAINTS AND THEY REALLY DIDN'T SEEM TO CARE. WE JUST FEEL AT 56,000 HIGHWAY MILES THESE SHOULD HAVE PLENTLY OF LIFE IN THEM YET.
