2017 RAM 2500 — Complaint #2178584
Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about SERVICE BRAKES filed February 19, 2026
NHTSA complaint #2178584 (ODI reference 11719142) concerns a 2017 RAM 2500 and was filed on February 19, 2026. The owner reports the failure occurred on June 25, 2021. The report was geocoded to California based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as service brakes, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same RAM 2500 cohort independently describe similar service brakes failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2017 RAM 2500 shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.
Complaint Description
The HCU for my truck failed and was replaced 6/25/2021. It failed again 12/2024 but before it could be replaced a recal for the HCU came out with the warning "The loss of ABS/ESC/Traction control may cause a vehicle crash without prior warning" Now the warning light keeps coming on and going off with the alarm sound as I drive. It also turns off the cruise control. This has been going on for well over a year with no date for a fix of something that can cause a crash without prior warning. There doesnt seem to be any urgency to fix something that can cause such a big problem. I have no choice other than to keep driving my truck hoping for the best. Any help with this is most appreciated. Thank you for your time, G. May
