Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM filed February 19, 2026
NHTSA complaint #2178415 (ODI reference 11719033) concerns a 2024 TOYOTA RAV4 and was filed on February 19, 2026. The owner reports the failure occurred on February 2, 2026. The report was geocoded to North Dakota based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as electrical system, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same TOYOTA RAV4 cohort independently describe similar electrical system failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2024 TOYOTA RAV4 shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.
Complaint Description
The vehicle's dashboard and 9.5" screen go blank while driving down the road. It is random at times and you have no idea how fast you are traveling, viewing screen, etc.. It just goes completely black. The Certified Toyota dealer says that there is a recall on the 12.5" screens blacking out randomly but not on the 9.5" screens so the vehicle does not qualify for the recall and Toyota is saying they don't have a fix for the vehicle. Have tried to contact higher level Toyota contacts (claims) and they have not been of any help. With the screen going completely black, an individual has no idea how fast they are driving, what service indicator lights might be on, no idea how much gas there is in the car. The entire dash and associated screen which also houses the back up camera are completely useless. It happens at random points in time while driving. This is a safety issue as one does not know speed of vehicle or any warning lights. Dash and screen are completely blank.
