2016 DODGE JOURNEY — Complaint #2176135
Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about BACK OVER PREVENTION: REARVIEW SYSTEM BRAKING filed February 12, 2026
NHTSA complaint #2176135 (ODI reference 11717520) concerns a 2016 DODGE JOURNEY and was filed on February 12, 2026. The owner reports the failure occurred on January 17, 2026. The report was geocoded to New York based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as back over prevention: rearview system braking, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: yes, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. A complaint that flags a crash, fire, or fatality is escalated on NHTSA's internal review queue and factors more heavily into any Preliminary Evaluation decision on this make and model. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same DODGE JOURNEY cohort independently describe similar back over prevention: rearview system braking failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2016 DODGE JOURNEY shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.
Complaint Description
The rear view camera has become unreliable. It sometimes flickers. It sometimes is upside down. It is sometimes gray. It works properly about 10% of the time. I believe it was a significant contributor to my backing into and damaging another vehicle in a parking lot. I understand that there is a recall notification (NHTSA 25V552; Chrysler 59C) for the Dodge Journey beginning with model year 2019. This vehicle is a 2016. I am not overly concerned about the specific accident noted above but do consider this a serious risk that should be reported.
