Open-data reference.

NHTSA Complaint about SEAT BELTS:FRONT filed January 21, 2026

NHTSA complaint #2168598 (ODI reference 11712494) concerns a 2026 HYUNDAI PALISADE and was filed on January 21, 2026. The owner reports the failure occurred on January 20, 2026. The report was geocoded to District of Columbia based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as seat belts:front, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. No VIN was supplied by the filer, so this complaint contributes to model-year trend data but cannot be tied to a specific vehicle.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same HYUNDAI PALISADE cohort independently describe similar seat belts:front failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

Dear Public Safety office, I am writing to request clarification regarding the proper operation of seat belt retractors. I want to ensure that I fully understand how seat belt mechanisms are intended to function during normal adult use. The reason for my inquiry is that I am experiencing inconsistent behavior between the driver side and passenger side seat belts in my new vehicle (Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy 2026). I have taken the car to the dealership and they informed me that it's working as expected by Hyundai but I am still unclear. I want to confirm whether the behavior I am seeing aligns with safety requirements. Here is what I am observing: •The driver side seat belt behaves as I would expect: if pulled fully and released quickly, it locks momentarily, but it releases normally on the next pull. •The passenger side seat belt, however, locks and remains locked, preventing the occupant from pulling the belt out again and moving even a quarter of an inch. This only unlocks
