NHTSA Complaint about WHEELS:RIM filed January 14, 2026

NHTSA complaint #2166368 (ODI reference 11711006) concerns a 2020 KIA SEDONA and was filed on January 14, 2026. The owner reports the failure occurred on January 8, 2026. The vehicle had 65,245 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Oregon based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as wheels:rim, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same KIA SEDONA cohort independently describe similar wheels:rim failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

The contact owns a 2020 Kia Sedona. While driving approximately 30 MPH on a main road, the steering wheel started shaking abnormally and became difficult to control. The vehicle was driven to a tire shop and then to an independent mechanic. Additionally, the sliding doors failed to open as needed, the steering wheel occasionally seized, there was tread separation in the tires, and the wheels were bent. The mechanic inspected the tires and steering system, performed a safety inspection, and determined that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. The tires were replaced, and the wheels were repaired; however, the sliding doors were not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 65,245.
