NHTSA Complaint about TIRES:SIDEWALL filed January 6, 2026

NHTSA complaint #2163615 (ODI reference 11709163) concerns a 2010 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500 and was filed on January 6, 2026. The owner reports the failure occurred on January 2, 2026. The report was geocoded to California based on the filer's self-reported location. The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500 cohort independently describe similar tires:sidewall failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

My truck tires were bought at Costco in 2015 and had 70k Warranty or 6yrs WCF. My added truck mileage since then is 12k miles. I discovered my driver rear passenger tire go flat . I put the spare and took it to Costco for repair. Costco informed me that this is a tire defect as the tire had a side wall perforation. Tire cannot be repaired and a new replacement is required. I looked up Michelin tire recalls and found one issued in 2013 about Michelin X-Radial tires discussing this same defect but it did not include my tire size ( P245/70R17 ) . Fortunately this incident did not occur while driving at high speed.
