Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about SUSPENSION:REAR filed December 19, 2025
NHTSA complaint #2158987 (ODI reference 11706137) concerns a 2014 RAM 1500 and was filed on December 19, 2025. The owner reports the failure occurred on October 30, 2025. The vehicle had 122,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Missouri based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as suspension:rear, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same RAM 1500 cohort independently describe similar suspension:rear failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description
The contact owns a 2014 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, his wife heard an abnormal whining sound coming from the rear end of the vehicle. The contact pulled over and discovered fluid leaking from the pinion gasket. Upon discovery of the failure, the contact started driving to an independent mechanic; however, the rear wheels locked up. There was no warning light illuminated. Due to the failure, the vehicle was towed to the independent mechanic, who discovered that the pinion nut had detached from the vehicle, causing the pinion shaft to drop into the rear differential, which caused the rear wheels to lock up. The dealer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure, but the contact had not yet received a response. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 122,000.
