NHTSA Complaint about VISIBILITY:DEFROSTER/DEFOGGER/HVAC SYSTEM filed December 11, 2025

NHTSA complaint #2156661 (ODI reference 11704630) concerns a 2024 TOYOTA GRAND HIGHLANDER and was filed on December 11, 2025. The owner reports the failure occurred on November 15, 2024. The report was geocoded to Indiana based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as visibility:defroster/defogger/hvac system, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same TOYOTA GRAND HIGHLANDER cohort independently describe similar visibility:defroster/defogger/hvac system failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

My Toyota Grand Highlander develops severe interior window fogging and condensation, affecting the windshield, front side windows, and occasionally rear windows. This occurs during normal driving, especially in cool or humid conditions. The fogging appears rapidly, and the HVAC/defrost system often fails to clear the windows effectively, even when set to full defrost with outside air intake. Interior moisture buildup is excessive compared to other vehicles I’ve owned, and the issue repeats regularly. This creates a significant visibility hazard, forcing me to adjust climate controls constantly while driving or pull over to clear the glass manually.
