Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about STEERING filed December 3, 2025
NHTSA complaint #2153691 (ODI reference 11702691) concerns a 2018 RAM 2500 and was filed on December 3, 2025. The owner reports the failure occurred on September 1, 2025. The report was geocoded to California based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as steering, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same RAM 2500 cohort independently describe similar steering failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2018 RAM 2500 shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.
Complaint Description
With the vehicle running, regardless of bein parked or in motion, if I turn the steering wheel either Left or Right, the steering wheel kicks back against the direction the wheel is being turned. Having to fight the steering wheel while driving makes it dangerous while driving at highway speeds around corners, curves, etc. Took it into the dealership and they did verified the issue, their report states " Scanned vehicle pulling no relatable DTC's"... "performed further inspection of steering column and steering components with no visual external concerns" The dealership believes it is an internal part within the steering gear box, referencing an "internal check valve" but would have to replace that part and test again with the total cost bein $3486.96 !!! and still may not fix the issue which is internal to the steering components.
