Open-data reference.

NHTSA Complaint about FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY filed September 26, 2025

NHTSA complaint #2134257 (ODI reference 11689932) concerns a 2016 JEEP CHEROKEE and was filed on September 26, 2025. The owner reports the failure occurred on September 24, 2025. The report was geocoded to Florida based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same JEEP CHEROKEE cohort independently describe similar fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

Took vehicle to Mechanic Shop as I kept smelling gas . Especially when I fill my tank with gas. At first I thought it was incidental but the smell was confirmed as the mechanic checked my car he discovered a gas leak from the GAS TANK! He said this is very unusual as the hose housed on the tank is built into the tank and this usually lasts the life of the car. How does something like this happen? No accidents, have not run over any sharp objects etc...
