Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL filed August 18, 2025
NHTSA complaint #2121554 (ODI reference 11681323) concerns a 2024 TOYOTA RAV4 and was filed on August 18, 2025. The owner reports the failure occurred on July 27, 2025. The report was geocoded to Missouri based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as vehicle speed control, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: yes, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. A complaint that flags a crash, fire, or fatality is escalated on NHTSA's internal review queue and factors more heavily into any Preliminary Evaluation decision on this make and model. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same TOYOTA RAV4 cohort independently describe similar vehicle speed control failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2024 TOYOTA RAV4 shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.
Complaint Description
On July 27, 2025 I was pulling into a parking space at a local pharmacy. I had removed my foot from the accelerator pedal and it was resting on the brake pedal. My 2024 Hybrid Rav 4 lurched suddenly and then accelerated at a fast rate of speed. It was as if the vehicle was possessed. Although I braked, I was not able to stop the vehicle before damage was done to the front end. I have reported this incident to Toyota and they sent someone to download the analytics from the black box. I have a copy of that report. I believe Toyota is responsible for the repair of this vehicle which had less than 5.000 miles on it at the time of the incident. My vehicle had been serviced at a Toyota dealership on 7/23 for it's 5,000 mile service. I am now scared of my own vehicle and fear this will happen again.
