NHTSA Complaint about TIRES:BEAD filed June 8, 2025

NHTSA complaint #2098731 (ODI reference 11665648) concerns a 2021 VOLKSWAGEN ID.4 and was filed on June 8, 2025. The owner reports the failure occurred on September 27, 2024. The report was geocoded to Washington based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as tires:bead, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same VOLKSWAGEN ID.4 cohort independently describe similar tires:bead failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

In Sept. 2024 we noticed that the edges of both front tires (Alenza 235/50 R20) had pieces coming off them so we arranged to have the tires replaced at the original dealer from which we had bought the car. They agreed that the tires were failing and replaced them. At that point the tires had only done 11827 miles so I asked if a warranty was applicable that would allow me to get back some of the replacement cost for the two tires. The dealer (Hazelwood Volkswagen of Bremerton, WA) said they would make inquiries and I paid the full price in the meantime. Despite numerous follow up inquiries, as well as contact with both VW USA and Bridgestone, I have not received any response. The suggestion seems to be that original equipment supplied with a new car are not covered by any warranty. After the tires were replaced I turned off the lane assist feature on the vehicle as this often seemed overly active due to random road markings. So far we have put about 3500 miles on the new tires and they
