NHTSA Complaint about EXTERIOR LIGHTING:TAIL LIGHTS filed June 3, 2025

NHTSA complaint #2097366 (ODI reference 11664729) concerns a 2014 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER and was filed on June 3, 2025. The owner reports the failure occurred on January 1, 2025. The report was geocoded to California based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as exterior lighting:tail lights, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same TOYOTA HIGHLANDER cohort independently describe similar exterior lighting:tail lights failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

Rear lights located both on the tailgate and body of the vehicle. The lights covers failed to remain adhered to the lights themselves and fell off and are partially adhered as a result of what appears to be a failure of the adhesion material . Two light covers may have been lost while driving. Unknown if their loss resulted in damage(s) to others. Without the outer cover results in the exposure of the lights to weather and potential failure. Review with Toyota of Orange service manager confirm the failure of adhesive/ manufacturing process of the lights
