NHTSA Complaint about STRUCTURE:BODY:HATCHBACK/LIFTGATE filed April 10, 2025

NHTSA complaint #2081856 (ODI reference 11653863) concerns a 2023 MERCEDES-BENZ GLC 300 and was filed on April 10, 2025. The owner reports the failure occurred on March 2, 2025. The report was geocoded to Ohio based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as structure:body:hatchback/liftgate, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 1, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same MERCEDES-BENZ GLC 300 cohort independently describe similar structure:body:hatchback/liftgate failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2023 MERCEDES-BENZ GLC 300 shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.

Complaint Description

1. Rear Hatch hands free system - closes unexpectedly while loading or unloading car without using feet to trigger system. Hatch will close down and trap driver in the rear, causing bruising on driver and requiring assistance to push hatch back up. Has been into dealer multiple times since this is HUGE risk to animals or small children exiting out of the rear. Dealer finally disabled hands free system. 2. Lane change assist/blind spot warning - Auto believes there's a vehicle in the lane to either side and will stop car from changing lanes, when actually there isn't a vehicle there. Has caused several close calls due to signaling to change lanes the car will then try to pull back into previous lane. Warning light remains on the side mirrors even when there are no vehicles in the lane. This is especially hazardous while driving at night and in less than optimal weather conditions.
