Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about VISIBILITY:REARVIEW MIRRORS/DEVICES filed January 30, 2025
NHTSA complaint #2061163 (ODI reference 11639623) concerns a 2024 BMW X5 and was filed on January 30, 2025. The owner reports the failure occurred on November 12, 2024. The report was geocoded to Arizona based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as visibility:rearview mirrors/devices, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same BMW X5 cohort independently describe similar visibility:rearview mirrors/devices failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2024 BMW X5 shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.
Complaint Description
Center rear view mirror stopped working and was replaced by Chapman BMW of Chandler but was replaced with a small aftermarket mirror that is causing dangers images in the mirrors because itâs splitting the image with the non manufactured mirror they replaced in my vehicle. I have attempted to resolve issues with Chapman BMW of Chandler and BMW North American customer care but was unsuccessful in getting a new manufacturer stock mirror reinstalled in my vehicle. The morrow placed in my vehicle is obscuring the vision of all oncoming traffic at night which is putting me at serious risk of an accident. I am requesting a mirror directly from factory to match the mirror that came stock in the vehicle.
