NHTSA Complaint about LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:HATCHBACK/LIFTGATE:LOCK filed December 27, 2024
NHTSA complaint #2050980 (ODI reference 11632580) concerns a 2021 LEXUS RX and was filed on December 27, 2024. The owner reports the failure occurred on December 22, 2024. The report was geocoded to Texas based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as latches/locks/linkages:hatchback/liftgate:lock, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same LEXUS RX cohort independently describe similar latches/locks/linkages:hatchback/liftgate:lock failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2021 LEXUS RX shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.
Complaint Description
On the Saturday (12/21) before Christmas, my hatch door wouldnât open with the key fob, push button in the vehicle or push button on the door. And the foot under the bumper opener has never worked for me. Anyways, because I couldnât get my door to open, I ended up loading my groceries in the back seat. When I got home, it still wouldnât work with the key fob or other buttons. One family member who tried to help me, pushed the door button and it suddenly opened after all the many attempts before. But then it wouldnât close back. Just like at the store, it made that beeping sound but that it makes when itâs closing or opening, but it wasnât closing. The next day on Sunday (12/22) I wouldnât use it because I was afraid if it opened, it wouldnât close back. The way we were able to get the door to close, was at least I thought it helped, I kept pushing the key fob and the door would allow my family member to manually push the door down a little at a time until it closed.
