NHTSA Complaint about BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA filed December 25, 2024
NHTSA complaint #2050592 (ODI reference 11632319) concerns a 2022 VOLVO C40BEV and was filed on December 25, 2024. The owner reports the failure occurred on December 25, 2024. The report was geocoded to New York based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as back over prevention: sensing system: camera, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same VOLVO C40BEV cohort independently describe similar back over prevention: sensing system: camera failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description
The backup camera on this model has serious reliability issues. It freezes while backing up, and frequently displays a "camera temporarily unavailable" message. Volvo attempted to improve the reliability with a software update this year, but it did very little. The fact that it displays the temporarily unavailable message reveals that Volvo clearly knows about the problem, and they think displaying this message is acceptable. The dealer service manager admits the problem is with the software, and has been discussed at length on internet forums. This car has terrible rear visibility, and a functioning backup camera is absolutely required for safe operation.
