Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about STEERING: STEERING WHEEL/HANDLE BAR filed August 19, 2024
NHTSA complaint #2017367 (ODI reference 11609317) concerns a 2023 MAZDA CX-5 and was filed on August 19, 2024. The owner reports the failure occurred on August 9, 2024. The report was geocoded to North Carolina based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as steering: steering wheel/handle bar, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: yes, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. A complaint that flags a crash, fire, or fatality is escalated on NHTSA's internal review queue and factors more heavily into any Preliminary Evaluation decision on this make and model. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same MAZDA CX-5 cohort independently describe similar steering: steering wheel/handle bar failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2023 MAZDA CX-5 shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.
Complaint Description
Was driving up [XXX] when simultaneously my dash board lit up with errors and malfunctions, my interior lights started flickering and my steering wheel and brakes locked. Unable to control the vehicle I gripped the wheel for dear life praying as it veered left. The 2023 CX 5 with only 18K struck the guard rail and went black on the inside and out. Only then was I able to counter the ricochet of the impact by redirecting the vehicle back on the grass to avoid getting smacked by 2 tractor trailers. SMH, I really almost died and now have to fight with my insurance to prove to them this is a real issue with these vehicle malfunctioning. I hope this helps someone and possibly save a life(s) - toyota_would_never, Greensboro, US INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
