NHTSA Complaint about BACK OVER PREVENTION: WARNINGS filed July 30, 2024

NHTSA complaint #2011731 (ODI reference 11605299) concerns a 2021 POLESTAR POLESTAR 2 and was filed on July 30, 2024. The owner reports the failure occurred on July 30, 2024. The report was geocoded to New York based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as back over prevention: warnings, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same POLESTAR POLESTAR 2 cohort independently describe similar back over prevention: warnings failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2021 POLESTAR POLESTAR 2 shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.

Complaint Description

This car will periodically lose all interior audio function. This includes safety alerts like parking, forward collision, rear collision, cross traffic, and any other alert you can think of including the sound the turn signal makes. Bluetooth audio and radio also unavailable. This is a commonly documented problem as noted by Polestar enthusiasts on Reddit and other forums. Some can fix the problem by performing a reset of the infotainment system. I have had instances in which resetting this system made no difference. The car was unfit by US safety standards until the next day if lucky enough to see the issue self correct. I have only had this car for 4 months, but every week or so this issue has happened at least once. This is an unrecoverable safety issue with risk of assumed safety features arbitrarily not working.
