Open-data reference.

NHTSA Complaint about EQUIPMENT:ELECTRICAL:RADIO/TAPE DECK/CD ETC. filed May 24, 2024

NHTSA complaint #1993998 (ODI reference 11590495) concerns a 2017 GMC TERRAIN and was filed on May 24, 2024. The owner reports the failure occurred on October 1, 2021. The report was geocoded to California based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as equipment:electrical:radio/tape deck/cd etc., one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same GMC TERRAIN cohort independently describe similar equipment:electrical:radio/tape deck/cd etc. failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2017 GMC TERRAIN shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.

Complaint Description

Roughly every 8 months Sirius XM "radio" runs an automatically triggered free subscription period that includes "weather alerts". These alerts BLOCK part of the car's normal navigational (map) system, requiring UNNECESSARY MOVEMENTS to dismiss the prompts so one can see map details. These movements RISK DRIVING MISTAKES. The weather alerts are unhelpful and unwanted: trivial events that don't affect me. And they keep repeating the same alert multiple times per day. I once called Sirius tech support to have them shut that feature off, but they claimed they couldn't, and to just wait out the promotion period. Sirius XM comes with the car and I can't remove it. I suspect the prompts are a marketing gimmick to trick people into sampling their music channels when they fiddle in the Sirius menus trying to turn off the alerts. Others on social media have reported similar problems in different car models. (PS: I bought the car used in 2019.)
