NHTSA Complaint about LANE DEPARTURE: LANE KEEP: AUTOMATIC STEERING filed April 17, 2024

NHTSA complaint #1984066 (ODI reference 11583474) concerns a 2018 HONDA ACCORD and was filed on April 17, 2024. The owner reports the failure occurred on October 4, 2020. The report was geocoded to Pennsylvania based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as lane departure: lane keep: automatic steering, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same HONDA ACCORD cohort independently describe similar lane departure: lane keep: automatic steering failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

The lane departure warning activated when centered in a lane with clearly marked lines on the road and the steering wheel started pulling me out of the lane on a major highway. Within 5 seconds of the initial warning a follow up warning saying "Road Departure" appears and the car initiated automatic breaking in the middle of a highway. There are not other cars around me at the time of the incident, but this could have caused a major accident as my car slammed on the breaks at 55 MPH. At no time did the car leave the lane despite the warnings. I reported this to the dealership and was told they would look into this if it happened again.
