Open-data reference.

NHTSA Complaint about VISIBILITY:GLASS, SIDE/REAR filed January 7, 2024

NHTSA complaint #1956026 (ODI reference 11564022) concerns a 2017 FORD F-150 and was filed on January 7, 2024. The owner reports the failure occurred on December 26, 2023. The report was geocoded to Illinois based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as visibility:glass, side/rear, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same FORD F-150 cohort independently describe similar visibility:glass, side/rear failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

On12.26.23 I entered my 2017 F150, closed the door, and the rear window shattered, causing glass to enter the back seat- falling on my child who was seated in the rear. I called the local Ford dealership because my truck is under warranty to 100,000 miles. The dealership said they refer people with that problem to a local glass shop. I took it there to be repaired, total cost with tax was $1067.00 There were no warnings, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to this happening. ***this submittal has an area to attached the service invoice- this function will not work for me, but I do have the invoice if needed.
