NHTSA Complaint about LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:TRUNK LID:LATCH filed November 29, 2023

NHTSA complaint #1946437 (ODI reference 11557447) concerns a 2016 KIA RIO and was filed on November 29, 2023. The owner reports the failure occurred on October 12, 2023. The report was geocoded to Illinois based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as latches/locks/linkages:trunk lid:latch, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same KIA RIO cohort independently describe similar latches/locks/linkages:trunk lid:latch failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

My trunk latch wasn't working. I couldn't close my trunk. I contact Kia service and since I still have a platinum warranty with them, asked them if they could repair it free of charge. They said no. So I had to use tape to keep the trunk shut which kept getting wet from the rain while I had to wait for my kia truck latch part to arrive through mail so my husband could install it. I am not sure if this was right before they knew of the issue or not, but I feel like I deserve a refund for the part.
