Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:PROPULSION SYSTEM:TRACTION BATTERY filed April 20, 2023
NHTSA complaint #1889120 (ODI reference 11518020) concerns a 2023 RIVIAN R1T and was filed on April 20, 2023. The owner reports the failure occurred on April 14, 2023. The report was geocoded to Virginia based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as electrical system:propulsion system:traction battery, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same RIVIAN R1T cohort independently describe similar electrical system:propulsion system:traction battery failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description
I picked up this vehicle brand new from a Rivian service center. On the way home after approximately 90 miles, the screens lit up with a message saying Critical Battery Issue: Service Vehicle Immediately. In addition to the warnings on the console, there was a very loud beeping sound that did not stop. In attempts to tow it to the service center, we also discovered that it was not possible to place the car in neutral which made it difficult to place on the tow truck. Had the car shut down entirely, I am not sure what the option would have been. To the best of my knowledge, Service has not officially diagnosed o
