Open-data reference.

NHTSA Complaint about LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:TRUNK LID:LOCK filed January 13, 2023

NHTSA complaint #1865452 (ODI reference 11501704) concerns a 2017 FORD MUSTANG and was filed on January 13, 2023. The owner reports the failure occurred on January 2, 2023. The report was geocoded to Georgia based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as latches/locks/linkages:trunk lid:lock, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same FORD MUSTANG cohort independently describe similar latches/locks/linkages:trunk lid:lock failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

My 2017 Mustang Convertible gave no warning to suddenly have no access to the trunk. The key fob doesn't open it. The inside button does not work. The seat doesn't fold down. There is no actual key hole to use. I am woman almost 70 years old. What if I have a flat tire? Everything I need for a flat tire is in the trunk. My first Aid kit is on the trunk. This is a serious problem and a poor design. I am still waiting for the dealer to fix the recall on the back up camera. I think both problems, the back up camera AND the trunk issue are in the same wiring harness. I sure hope I don't get a flat.
