NHTSA complaint #1852945 (ODI reference 11493022) concerns a 2018 RAM 2500 and was filed on November 10, 2022. The owner reports the failure occurred on October 4, 2022. The vehicle had 19,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Pennsylvania based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as service brakes, hydraulic:antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same RAM 2500 cohort independently describe similar service brakes, hydraulic:antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description
The contact owns a 2018 Ram 2500. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the rear wheels would spin upon depression of the accelerator pedal. The contact stated that a warning chime would sound as the ABS and traction control warning lights illuminated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred him to a dealer for a diagnostic test. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle with a defective anti-lock brake system (ABS) and hydraulic control unit (HCU) that needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 19,000. The contact stated that the necessary part for repair is on backorder. The vehicle slides in the rain and they are not confident in driving in the snow. The vehicle also cannot be used to tow a trailer now due to the trailer brakes not activating. The contact provided the repair in which FCA paid half of the repairs for the vehicle minus the amount for the diagnostic fee.
