NHTSA Complaint about FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM:FUEL RAIL filed November 1, 2022

NHTSA complaint #1851271 (ODI reference 11491851) concerns a 2016 KIA SEDONA and was filed on November 1, 2022. The owner reports the failure occurred on November 1, 2022. The report was geocoded to Connecticut based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as fuel system, gasoline:fuel injection system:fuel rail, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same KIA SEDONA cohort independently describe similar fuel system, gasoline:fuel injection system:fuel rail failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

Car has a strong gas smell coming from front area through vents, when opened hood strong gas is smelled. Car is now stalling when starting. Afraid that car will burst into flames and explode. I have read that there was a recall due to cracked fuel rail but my 2016 does not fall within the model years. This is ridiculous that it’s the exact same thing happening to my 2016 sedona. The smell of gas is excessive and I had to take all of my kids out of the car and now do not trust to drive it. My car was completely fine and how can something randomly crack and cause this. No light or warning indicates this issue.
