Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: SENSING SYSTEM: RADAR filed September 5, 2022
NHTSA complaint #1838581 (ODI reference 11482948) concerns a 2018 HONDA ODYSSEY and was filed on September 5, 2022. The owner reports the failure occurred on August 25, 2022. The report was geocoded to California based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as forward collision avoidance: sensing system: radar, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: yes, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. A complaint that flags a crash, fire, or fatality is escalated on NHTSA's internal review queue and factors more heavily into any Preliminary Evaluation decision on this make and model. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same HONDA ODYSSEY cohort independently describe similar forward collision avoidance: sensing system: radar failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description
The automatic emergency braking system has failed multiple times. The vehicle is available for inspection. My safety and the safety of others are put at risk when my vehicle executes unexpected emergency braking. The problem has been reproduced and confirmed by the dealer on two different occasions. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives of other, except the Honda dealer. No other warning lamps, messages of other symptoms. Around Feb 1, 2019 the car started applying the brakes when crossing slightly raised railroad tracks. The braking action was hard enough to engage the antilock brake feature. On 2/11/19 the vehicle was taken to AutoWest Honda for warranty repairs at 22,853 miles. The millimeter radar was mis-aimed. This corrected the problem. See attached repair order. On 9/21/20 while driving on the freeway at approximately 65 miles per hour the automatic emergency braking system activated as I passed a vehicle on the right.
