Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:COOLING UNIT AND LINES filed June 9, 2022
NHTSA complaint #1818194 (ODI reference 11468545) concerns a 2013 FORD EXPEDITION and was filed on June 9, 2022. The owner reports the failure occurred on June 4, 2022. The report was geocoded to Illinois based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as power train:automatic transmission:cooling unit and lines, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same FORD EXPEDITION cohort independently describe similar power train:automatic transmission:cooling unit and lines failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description
Transmission fluid cooler line ruptured causing loss of propulsion. There is a known and common problem with the cooler lines breaking at the fitting where the Transmission lines meet the cooler. There is a meeting of dis-similar metals (Aluminum and Steel) in this fitting that is thought to increase the risk of fracture. There are multiple reports of the fitting fracturing in the same place in Ford Forums and Youtube videos. This affects the Ford F150s, Expeditions and similar Lincoln models.
