NHTSA Complaint about FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:AUXILLARY TANK filed February 8, 2022

NHTSA complaint #1793457 (ODI reference 11451055) concerns a 2011 FORD EDGE and was filed on February 8, 2022. The owner reports the failure occurred on February 1, 2022. The report was geocoded to Nevada based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as fuel system, gasoline:storage:auxillary tank, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same FORD EDGE cohort independently describe similar fuel system, gasoline:storage:auxillary tank failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

Failed fuel tank. Noticed fuel like smell when starting car for two weeks but saw no indication of anything wrong. Last week fuel splashed out from underneath vehicle after pulling out of driveway leaving large puddle and stream of fuel. Visual assessment indicated fuel leakage from top portion of fuel tank. Contacted mechanic who removed tank to assess source of leakage and found issue to be damage at rollover valve and severe leakage. There were no warning lamps or messages indicating issue. Severe fire hazard putting safety of my family, self, and home at risk.
